Temps libre

“Temps Libre” is the first release from the St. Laurent Piano Project, a recording series initiated by musician Stefan Christoff.

Featuring Brahja Waldman on sax, Peter Burton on contrabass and Stefan Christoff on piano, “Temps Libre” is a musical exploration recorded at La Sala Rossa in late summer 2012 as Quebec’s student uprising echoed across the city.

temps libre - reflections on EP by poet Kaie Kellough

situationist international maintains that free time is illusory and rarely free; economic and social forces appropriate free time from the individual and sell it back to them as the commodity known as “leisure.” - from wikipedia

do you have free time? do you free time? do you dream of free time? what do you choose to do with your time?

would you choose to march in the streets in support of a student strike? would you choose to bang a pot on your balcony every night at 8pm to show your dissatisfaction with a corrupt government?

if thousands of people chose to do just that, for months on end, and also chose to disrupt the leisure of others, what would those choices say about our social moment? how would those choices change our understanding of our time?

on this recording, stefan christoff’s piano, brahja waldman’s alto saxophone, and peter burton’s contrabass drop into free time to eloquently pose and address these questions.
